I tried to delete the offending object from the diff's but it did not
cure the problem. I fear the database is already corrupted.
So I will start over with a fresh installation of 7.57.
Thanx for helping!

Hi all,
Is this a problem that could be overcome with a newer version of
overpass?
Yes. From version 0.7.57 on, the database backend can handle very large
objects.
Is there any way to proceed with the current installation?
There is an automatic migration from 0.7.56 to 0.7.57. If you start the
update process of 0.7.57 on a 0.7.56 database, it will write back the
0.7.57 format.
Other than that, 0.7.53 is over five years old, and I do not remember
details. From the release notes,
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Overpass_API/versions
it looks like there have no database changes happened since. It is
definitively untested, thus if you can then you should make a copy of
your database before applying. If not, you do not lose anything over
deleting it.
Best regards,
Roland
