[overpass] debugging a new overpass installation

i'm working on getting an installation of overpass working
against OpenHistoricalMap, and i'm looking for pointers on
how to debug some issues i'm having.

i'm trying to get some simple query results from
overpass.openhistoricalmap.org/api/xapi
and everything is coming back with

Error in [way[bbox=-42.35,-76.93,42.37,-76.911][highway=raceway]]:

whereas when i run the same query against

overpass-api.de/api/xapi?

i get a null result, but no errors.

any suggestions on how i should proceed?
